Finding models in Paris to be much more expensive than the peasants who posed for him in Holland, Vincent turns to self-portraiture.

He continues to experiment with Monticelli’s bright, sometimes garish, palette and his far sketchier style. He combines his newly heightened color palette with sharp contrasts between light and shadow.
